"Zaryk" [Twisted Epiphany Series, Book 1] by C. A. Jonelle

Author's Book Description : One fatal moment tears Zaryk’s life apart and he struggles to cope with his loss and grief. Years later, with his band ‘Twisted Epiphany’ on the cusp of success, Zaryk is finding the answers in partying and alcohol. Enter Lyndsay, a shy college girl who gives Zaryk hope that there can be happy endings in life. But one night of passion ruins his dreams of something more meaningful and spoils their friendship. Misunderstandings drive them apart and Zaryk is soon lost in a different world as ‘Twisted Epiphany’ become ever more famous. Will he get the chance to tell Lyndsay how he feels? Or will Zaryk’s stardom and Lyndsay’s insecurities keep them apart?

A story of passion, love, loss and the pressures of fame, "Zaryk" is the first in the ‘Twisted Epiphany’ series that follows Zaryk, Zayne, Zayden, Deklan and Kreed as they take their band from small town success to world-wide phenomenon.

**Not intended for those under 18. Contains mature content.**

My Book Review : 3 out of 5 stars. This is the beginning of one continuous saga. Since the beginning of college, Zaryk (Z) and Lyndsay have been best friends. Both are very attracted to one another but are afraid as to what will happen them afterwards if anything did happen between them. During one drunken night, they hook up. In the morning, they find everything changed between them, mostly because they don’t communicate with one another and Lyndsay takes off. Years pass and once they meet up again it seems they both want to start over while picking up where they left off. Yet will it be that easy to just forget past mistakes and start over? Or even if they can, will Lyndsay finally be able to open up to Z and speak from her heart?

It will keep you on your toes and throw major loops your way, so be prepared as not all of the surprises are pleasant. In truth, I’m still reeling a bit by everything that happens to Z or to those he cares about in this novel. In addition, while the sex scenes are intense and hot throughout this novel, I found it hard to come to terms with Z and Lyndsay relationship. Mostly because you don’t get to see their relationship grow, it was more like they were already together and then poor choices pulled them apart which forces the reader to just accept that and move on with the plot. And I found that hard to do.

Nevertheless, I liked the idea of Z and Lyndsay together. I understood where Lyndsay was coming from by being shy and how her defenses got in her way. Then while I liked that Z finally steps up in forcing her to open up and make a relationship between them work, I hated his poor choices in the beginning. Yet even though I feel like a “wishy-washy” reader with my affections for this novel, I am intrigued as to where this series will lead us next as it’s pretty open-ended.

I recommend this novel to those looking for a highly dramatic contemporary rocker romance!

Book Teaser(s) :
“This is kind of awkward huh?” He leans his head back and looks over at me.
I giggle then clap my hand over my mouth.
Zaryk moves my hand away. “Boy, did I miss that adorable giggle of yours.”
He lays his hand on top of mine and my gaze snaps to his. A smile is on his lips and his eyes shine. I feel my cheeks burn red and I look away.
“I don‟t remember you being so shy.”
“You also weren‟t a famous rock star the last time I saw you. I don‟t want to embarrass myself.”
“I‟m the same person I was the last time.”
“I guess so.” ~ within Chapter 9 - titled 'Lyndsay'

Book Excerpt :

I growl loudly, echoing in the night air. “I’m not going to chase after you Lyndsay!”

Stopping, she turns to face me with a startled expression on her gorgeous face.

“What is it? Is he the reason you can’t get over Kendall and me?” I move closer to her.

“Yes.” Her answer is barely a whisper.

My heart drops into the pit of my stomach. The thought of anyone hurting her touches a nerve … a big nerve. I inch closer until I’m directly in front of her. Reaching up, I glide my fingers against her neck, rubbing my thumb along her jawline. She lifts her gaze to mine.

“Tell me how he hurt you. I want to understand where this fear is coming from.”

She twists her face out of my hands and I drop them to my side. Tears are glistening in her eyes. I can’t stand to see her like this and I can’t stand how she’s making me feel right now. I can feel the fire building deep inside me. Deklan appears at the exit.

Lyndsay turns to go back inside. I’m fed up with this shit, but I don’t want to lose her. I make one last attempt and grab her arm and turn her toward me. “If you leave, you might as well take my heart with you. I won’t need it anymore, because it won’t bother to beat without you.”

Deklan freezes and watches us, his face full of concern.

I let go of her arm and she turns back toward the building. She disappears and I feel a big part of me die inside.
